GHAS General Education Lecture Series on Ethnic Studies
Topic: Letting Go to Move Forward: Podcasting, Conscientization, and the Rebirth of a Marriage Migrant Women’s Movement in Taiwan
Lecturer: Prof. Hsiao-Chuan Hsia (Professor, Graduate Institute of Social Work, National Chengchi University)
When resources are scarce and movements reach a standstill, how can action be reborn? This lecture takes the TransAsia Sisters Association, Taiwan as a case study and draws on 30 years of migration movement practice to show how marriage migrant women, through a self-initiated podcast, have rekindled organizational energy and action. From Paulo Freire to Alain Touraine, the talk invites you to see how change truly happens when those at the margins become the subjects of their own stories.
Prof. Hsiao-Chuan Hsia has been researching the issue of “foreign brides” since 1994. Guided by the principle that research and practice are inseparable, she founded the “Literacy Class for Foreign Brides” in Meinong in 1995. After eight years of empowerment work, the TransAsia Sisters Association, Taiwan was finally established in 2003 with the active participation of migrant women themselves. In the same year, she also helped form the Alliance for Human Rights Legislation for Immigrants and Migrants (AHRLIM), bringing together NGOs and scholars concerned with migrant workers and marriage migrants. The alliance has been dedicated to advancing immigration and labor rights in Taiwan and actively building transnational connections with migrant and labor movements abroad.
