Introduction

History
This PhD program was established in 2018 and enrolled two full-time students in its first year. The program is administrated by the College of Hakka Studies, and the courses are offered by faculty from the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Department of Communication and Technology.

Objectives
Taiwans experience in preserving the culture of the Hakka ethnic group in terms of its language, communication, festivals, culture industry, education, and cultural governance is crucial to the study of the long-term trajectory of human civilization. Advanced researchers in Hakka studies not only contribute to the governance and development of ethnic cultures in Taiwan but also help to promote understanding, interpretation, and cultural governance of ethnic cultures in China, Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, and the rest of the world. The College of Hakka Studies was established in 2004. With a history of nearly two decades, the College of Hakka Studies has established a solid foundation to help the PhD program to foster a new generation of researchers in Hakka studies.

Orientation
The College of Hakka studies combines expertise in ethnic governance and communications technology. PhD students must possess core competencies in theories and methods of Hakka research, Hakka classical studies, and global Hakka studies. Regarding the conceptual and theoretical aspects of ethnic governance, students are required to be deeply familiar with ethnic and cultural theories, ethnic studies, global governance, and social innovation–related research. In terms of communication and technology, students must be committed to exploring media culture, strategic communication, and communications technology.

Features
In addition to being rooted in the regional and ethnic experiences of Taiwan, the PhD program emphasizes internationally oriented academic experience. To provide this training to our PhD students, we integrate resources from professional programs, including from the University System of Taiwan and the Institutes of Ethnology, Sociology, and Taiwan History of Academia Sinica. Students are also required to undertake exchange programs at partner universities or research institutions abroad.
