Dean Chang Wei-An won the 2017 Hakka Service Award
Dean Chang Wei-An of College of Hakka Studies, National Chiao Tung University received the highest honorary Global Hakka award --the Hakka Service Award and the Outstanding Achievement Award in Academics, Art and Cultural Industry, a well-deserved achievement!
Dean Chang Wei-An is the first Doctor of Sociology trained in Taiwan. With his long standing involvement in Hakka research and teaching, in-depth Hakka knowledge, establishment of the doctoral program in the College of Hakka Studies, cultivation of advanced talents in Hakka research, development of the foundation of Hakka knowledge system, and integration of academic and meaning of life into Hakka research to energize Hakka research, his contributions are indispensable.
The selection process for the 2017 Hakka Service Award took nearly five months. This year, 10 winners were selected. Mr. Tseng Guei-Hai and Mr. Lo Chao-Chin were awarded the Life-Long Service Award; Mr. He Shih-Sung and Ms. Li Yu-Fang were awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award in Language, Cultural History and Literature; Mr. Teng Hsing-Kuang, Mr. Wen Tsai-Tang and Mr. John Yu were awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award in Public Affairs and Overseas Promotion; Mr. Hu Chuan-Hsiung and Mr. Chang Wei-An were awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award in Academics, Art and Cultural Industry; and Mr. Lin Ping-Huan was awarded the Jury Special Award.
During his speech, Mr. Li, the Chair of the Hakka Affairs Council, told reporters that the competition for the Hakka Service Award this year was intense, with more than 80 candidates vying for the awards. After a 3-stage process of fair selection, 10 well-deserving winners were selected. Mr. Li also took the opportunity to specially thank participants from all disciplines for their contribution to Hakka work. Regardless of whether they won any award, every participant in Hakka work is an important contributor to the development of Hakka culture, and it is hoped that everyone will continue to work together tirelessly in the Hakka effort.
